Working as a gardener in Australia

Are you coming to Australia with a student visa and looking for a part-time job to combine with your studies? We are going to give you a good option: working as a gardener in Australia.

Why work as a gardener in Australia?

If you like plants, outdoor manual jobs and your English is still not good enough to perform qualified jobs, the gardening service may help you get your first income in Australia.

What does working as a gardener in Australia involve?

The job basically consists of taking care of gardens. What is true is that there are differences between the tasks to be carried out depending on the type of client you have. Normally, three types of clients are distinguished: private individuals, residential developments or companies.

In the first two cases, you will have to deal directly with the client or with the president of the community, normally charging for each job separately. If you manage to work for a company that has gardens on its premises, for example, you may even end up being on the payroll. Although it is true that this last case is not the most common.

In any case, the typical tasks of a gardener are usually the following:

  • Planting.
  • Watering.
  • Spraying with chemical products to protect plants against pests.
  • Mowing the lawn.
  • Trimming hedges and pruning plants.
  • Removing weeds and rubbish.

If you like working outdoors, this will be a good job for you, because Australia has a very pleasant climate almost all year round. That said, you will need to have the ability to perform physically hard work, since you will have to dig soil or lift and carry heavy objects. In short, you will have to know how to adapt to doing different types of practical tasks, in most cases getting your hands dirty.

Thus, with a responsible attitude and with the ability to comply with certain health and safety procedures, you will be able to work without problems with specialised equipment and chemical products.

As for salaries, they usually vary quite a lot depending on the type of tasks and the size of the garden. Normally, between $17 and $22 AUD per hour is usually paid.
