Living in Sydney

Its multicultural environment, vibrant street life, surf culture, and numerous activities make it a comprehensive city to travel to and live in.

The oldest and largest city in Australia

If you’re seeking a cosmopolitan atmosphere and plenty of job opportunities, Sydney is your city.

Like all major cities, there are certain drawbacks, with Sydney’s being closely linked to the high cost of living. However, one of its main advantages is offering higher salaries than other Australian cities, making it possible to cope with the high living costs if you’re planning to study and work in Sydney.

Ultimately, it’s about weighing everything up, and Dingoos is here to help with that. One of our specialized Dingoos Guides will advise you throughout the process, addressing all your concerns and outlining a feasible plan to start your adventure in Australia.

    What's accommodation like in Sydney?

In major Australian cities, accommodation tends to be a bit more expensive. However, if you’re looking for affordable housing in Sydney, the further you are from the center, the cheaper it’ll be. Naturally, the amenities of the apartment will also influence the price. For example, a single room will cost more than a shared one. Weekly prices for accommodation in Sydney based on location are as follows:

    • Single room: between $275 – $400 AUD/week.
    • Shared room: between $200 – $250 AUD/week.

*Price range varies depending on the room’s centrality.

For your initial days, and to ensure you don’t have to worry about anything, we’ll also manage your accommodation and airport pickup, all from Dingoos’ Integration Coordination department.

Best areas to live in Sydney

Here are some of the best areas to live in Sydney. Take a look and find your ideal neighborhood!

    Icono

    CBD

It offers typical downtown advantages: lots of work, shops, bars, restaurants, and leisure options nearby. Not recommended for those seeking tranquility or on a tight budget.

    Icono

    Surry Hills

Very close to the CBD but a bit more affordable. Many students live there, especially if they have to commute to the city center daily for school. There are also many bars, restaurants, shops, and nightlife.

    Icono

    Newtown

It’s Sydney’s alternative neighborhood. Cultural, bohemian, and bustling. Plus, it’s relatively close to the center.

    Icono

    Eastern suburbs

Bondi is the most popular neighborhood, well-connected to the CBD by public transport, just 30 minutes by bus from downtown. It’s perfect for enjoying the beach atmosphere, sports, good restaurants, and cafes. As you move away from the beach, you’ll get closer to Bondi Junction, where large shopping centers and supermarkets are located.

Bondi is an expensive neighborhood to live in, so some people live in neighboring beach suburbs like Rose Bay or further south like Randwick, where prices are a bit lower.

How does transportation work in Sydney?

Public transportation in Sydney covers almost the entire metropolitan area and consists of trains, buses, trams, metro, and ferries. Its price is high compared to other cities, but with the Opal Card, you can save a bit since it’s valid for all mentioned transports. Weekly prices for this card based on the transportation that suits you best are:

    • Train: $23.52 AUD
    • Bus: $28.00 AUD
    • Tram: $16.80 AUD
    • Ferry: $16.80 AUD

The Opal Card has a monthly bonus of $210 AUD.

If you’re unsure how to get the transportation card in Sydney, you can relax because your Dingoos Integrator will accompany you personally on the first day to get it. Additionally, you can also use your contactless card or even your phone instead of the Opal Card and enjoy all its benefits. Your Dingoos Integrator will explain how it works.

    Food and restaurants

Although food expenses vary from person to person, the average cost of weekly groceries in Sydney is around $100-120 AUD. But don’t worry, once you’ve been in Sydney for a while, you’ll learn to save a few dollars by taking advantage of supermarket offers like IGA and Aldi.

If you want to eat out, keep in mind that there’s a big difference between cheaper restaurants (around $18 AUD) and more expensive ones ($50 AUD). A pint of beer can cost around $8-10 AUD, and if you decide to order a drink at a pub, it’s typically around $18 AUD.

    Leisure and social life

It’s impossible to get bored in Sydney because there are always plans, options for going out, day and night events, quiet or lively activities, new places to discover, beaches, and mountains. It’s a city to everyone’s taste, full of life and international presence. Take advantage of discounts in Sydney for #DingoosFamily members and make the most of the city.
