What are the requirements to study and work in Malta?

The requirements to study and work in the pearl of the Mediterranean will depend on your country of origin and the length of your stay.

European Union citizens

Malta is part of the European Union, so it’s one of the countries that imposes the fewest requirements on Spaniards when it comes to studying in the country — in fact, none, unless you plan to work in Malta for more than 3 months. In that case, you’ll need to apply for your Maltese ID, known as the eResidence Card.

To get the eResidence Card, we recommend following these steps:

  1. Register as a job seeker on Jobplus, Malta’s employment website.
  2. Apply for your Social Security number. You can do this once there by going to the Social Security offices in Valletta or online, and it takes about 2 weeks to receive it.
  3. Open a bank account at a Maltese bank. We recommend BNF, a well-known bank in the country that offers many facilities.
  4. Apply for the eResidence Card if you want to stay working for more than 3 months. You can do this at the Department of Citizenship and Expatriate Affairs.

Latin American citizens

If, on the other hand, you’re reading us from Latin America, these are the requirements you’ll need to meet if you want to move to Malta to study and work.

  • A valid passport with at least 3 months of validity.
  • Enroll in an English course with a minimum duration of 3 months. Proof of payment and a letter of acceptance from the school.
  • Apply for a student visa. With it, you can work 20 hours a week. Depending on your country of origin, you’ll need to apply for the visa before traveling or once there. For example, if you’re from Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, or the Dominican Republic, you’ll need to apply for the visa before traveling.
  • Round-trip plane tickets matching the duration of your course.
  • Proof of accommodation reservation.
  • Medical insurance.
  • Proof of sufficient savings to cover your stay in Malta, around €784.7 per month.

To work in the country you’ll need to:

  1. Apply for a work permit once 3 months of your course have passed. This procedure costs €280.
  2. Apply for the eResidence Card (following the same steps as European applicants).
  3. Open a bank account in a Maltese bank.
  4. Have medical insurance with a minimum coverage of €30,000.

There are other types of visas that allow you to work full-time in Malta, such as the Single Work Permit. If you want to know what it offers and learn about other types of visas, we recommend reading our page about types of visas in Malta or contacting us. We’ll tell you which visa to choose depending on your situation and help you with all the procedures.
