Living in Sunshine Coast: Nature Outside the Big City

Just like the rest of the cities in the state of Queensland, Sunshine Coast has one of the best climates in Australia, which makes it a perfect destination for practicing any water sport.

Where is Sunshine Coast located?

Sunshine Coast is an Australian urban area located north of Brisbane, in the southeast of the state of Queensland. With a population of 270,270 inhabitants, it is the ninth largest metropolis in Australia and the third in the state of Queensland. If you decide to live in Sunshine Coast, you should know that there are four small urban centers that gradually connect, shaping the region. They are Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, Coolum, and Noosa, each with its own particular charm.

With a wonderful climate all year round, this city is a perfect destination to relax or to practice endless water sports on its long beaches of white sand.

So, if your intention is to practice surfing, water skiing, or sailing, living in Sunshine Coast will be an advantage for you. On the other hand, if you like big cities guarded by huge skyscrapers, you will find a disadvantage in this city, and that is that Sunshine Coast has none. Here, most houses do not rise above the treetops surrounding them.

What is accommodation like in Sunshine Coast?

Sunshine Coast has four urban centers that connect and shape the region. Thus, depending on the area where you are, accommodation prices may vary. The largest cities in the entire region are Maroochydore and Mooloolaba. The smallest urban center is Coolum, and in an intermediate position is Noosa.

To give you an idea of the average weekly price for accommodation depending on the location, they are:

    • Single room in a three-bedroom apartment in the city center: $250 – $300 AUD.
    • Single room in a three-bedroom apartment outside the city center: $200 – $250 AUD.

How does transportation work in Sunshine Coast?

The distances between each of the main urban centers of the Sunshine Coast region vary greatly. For example, between Caloundra and Noosa there are about 55 km, and between Maroochydore and Mooloolaba only 4 km.

The most used means of transport is the bus, since it allows you to move from one city to another in the most economical way. There is the Translink card, an electronic pass that allows you to use both the trains and buses in Sunshine Coast.

You also have the option of buying a bike or scooter to get around the different cities of the region or even using the taxi services offered in the area.

    Food and shopping

In general, the Sunshine Coast region is ideal for relaxing and practicing water sports, but this varies a bit depending on the urban center you are in.

Thus, in Caloundra, the first city in the region, with a super long estuary, it is perfect for practicing surfing, water skiing, or sailing.

Maroochydore and Mooloolaba, in addition to wonderful beaches, have an intense nightlife with many restaurants, cafés, and shopping centers.

Coolum, the smallest city, has a significant concentration of hotels and 5-star resorts. In this area of the region, you will find tourist offers with a very good quality-price ratio.

Noosa, the last city of Sunshine Coast, combines glamour with beautiful beaches and lots of surfing. Quality-price, this city is a bit more expensive in proportion.

To give you an idea, the average price of the weekly grocery shopping basket in Sunshine Coast is around $80 AUD, approximately. Remember to take advantage of last-minute offers that many supermarkets offer on perishable products like meat or fish.

    Leisure and social life

Being a very touristic area, there is no shortage of leisure alternatives here designed for all ages. From walks along trails in natural parks or almost deserted beaches, to Australian breakfasts in trendy bars, or outdoor barbecues.
