When will Australia open its borders?

The million dollar question! There are not a few students and applicants for all kinds of visas who ask themselves (and you ask us) when Australia will open its borders: that is why, to give you a clue of how the issue is right now and clarify your doubts, we have decided to launch this post .

As you know, in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, on March 20, 2020, the Australian government decided to close its borders to all people who were not Australian citizens or permanent residents. A few months later, we are still patiently waiting for the news confirming the date for the reopening of international borders. Although at the moment, a final reopening date has not yet been confirmed, what we do know is that the time to open them again is closer than ever.

When it will be? It is still not entirely clear. In any case, everything seems to indicate that the date could vary depending on the type of visa you have. Let's take a look at what we know so far!

When will Australia open its borders for students?

Confirmed: international students will be the first to return to Australia. International education is a key factor for the Australian economy, and for the same reason, in numerous press conferences, both the Australian Prime Minister and the Minister of Immigration have mentioned that allowing access to international students is among their priorities and that borders will be opened for them as soon as it is safe to do so.

Although the Australian government has not yet given an exact date for the opening of borders for international studentsThey are working on a pilot program in which, for example, they allowed access to 350 international students from the University of Canberra. The hypothesis is being considered that the opening of borders will be done in a staggered manner, allowing the access of international students who come from countries with low Covid rates such as New Zealand, China, Japan or Korea (also due to a proximity issue) and that in a second phase, it is extended to countries in Western Europe and Latin America as the cases of infected continue to remit.

For now, from Dingoos, we are recommending our students to organize their study plans from January 2021. Keep in mind that we have never experienced a situation like this, and that everything will depend on how everything evolves.

When will the borders open for tourists and work & holidays?

Regarding the situation of tourists and visa holders work & holiday, everything seems to indicate that the thing could take a little longer. A few weeks ago Simon Birmingham, Australia's Minister of Trade, Tourism and Investment, said that borders and the free movement of people is something that might not happen until mid-2021.

Australia is a country that from the first moment knew very well how to deal with the situation of the pandemic so that it did not spread within its own borders. And despite the regrowth in the city of Melbourne, in view of the numbers of infected across Australia, It seems that he has succeeded.

We hope that the situation will stabilize around the world and that international students will soon be allowed entry so that you can start or resume your studies in person.

Until then and from now, if you have any questions, you can write us and we will answer you in the time it takes for a dingo to howl 🙂 Because now, as it seems that things are slowly returning to normal, it may be the best time to start planning your trip for the next few months. And here we are to help you achieve it!
